Private Banking and Financial Privacy
Private BankingIn the United States, with the Bank Secrecy Act, most American citizens feel that banks are quite safe, and they are. However, they aren't nearly as secretive as you might imagine. You can get all the information you need about anyone's U.S. bank account just by knowing their 10 digit account number. In addition, the new trend in U.S. banking has been the selling of customer information to telemarketing companies; another way banks earn money. In some cases, your name is given out, your account balances your social security number and more. Essentially, the Bank Secrecy Act means nothing. It is estimated that more than two-thirds of the world's wealth resides in offshore accounts. Offshore banks or banks in certain international jurisdictions, unlike U.S. banks, have very strong criminal laws concerning secrecy. In these international banks, if an employee gives out confidential information on an account, that employee and the bank can be held criminally liable.
